There may be times when you have concerns about individuals (student, faculty, or staff) or the safety of others and our community. The best initial step is to report your concerns to a campus resource that can answer your questions, help develop a plan, or, in some cases, take direct action. Below is a brief chart of some important resources to help you decide whom to call depending upon the level and type of your concern. However, any of these offices can help you or direct you to the appropriate resource.
Types of Concerns You May Have
Mild Concern
- Poor performance and preparation
- Excessive absences or tardiness
- Repeated requests for special consideration (especially when this represents a change from previous functioning)
- Unusual or changed pattern of interaction
- Excessive anxiety
Moderate Concern
- Disruptive behavior
- Poor social support or conflict
- Exaggerated emotional response that is obviously inappropriate to the situation
- Dramatic weight loss or gain
Significant Concern
- Threatening Behavior
- Substance use/abuse
- Depressed mood or low energy
- Hyperactive or rapid speech
- Swollen or red eyes
- Change in personal hygiene or dress
- Strange or bizarre behavior indicating loss of contact with reality

- Thoughts, plan, means, and intent related to suicide or homicide
The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), does not inhibit university employees from speaking to one another when concerns about students exist. Questions related to sharing information about university employees should be referred to the Employee Assistance Program and Human Resources.
